No different than the rest of the country or the deep south, housing in New Jersey and particularly Princeton in the 1950's was determined and separated by race. It didn't matter that you were a World War II veteran, veteran housing was closed to all African Americans and for those who had advanced degrees with executive level jobs housing options were limited to the "black neighborhood".
