Know Your Neighbor:  Jennifer Tao talks about a passion for art

Jennifer Tao has never taken an art class at Princeton High School. You wouldn’t know that, however, by looking at her involvement in the arts at PHS. Numina Gallery, PHS’s student-run art gallery, currently features Tao’s work in the annual Senior Show.

An exhibition of works by artist Vittorio Sciolli, a painter, printmaker and sculptor whose work focuses on the human figure, will open with a reception at 5 p.m. Friday, May 18, at 171 Broadmead St. The exhibition is sponsored by the Princeton University League.

Maurer Productions Onstage will take audiences back to a time when beautiful music, colorful costumes and screwball comedy were the height of entertainment with the “The Drowsy Chaperone” at Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theatre. Dates and times for this Tony Award-winning show are: Fridays, June 8 and 15 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, June 9 and 16 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, June 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on MCCC's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. A reception with the cast and crew follows the opening night performance on June 8.

Singer and pianist Fred Miller presents a Lecture in Song Saturday, May 19 at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of Princeton Public Library.
 
Miller, a favorite with library audiences, returns to present another in his series of programs examining American pop standards. This program focuses on lyricist, composer, pop singer and recording executive Johnny Mercer, whose many hits include “That Old Black Magic,” “Fools Rush In,” One for My Baby,” and “I Remember You.”

Featured poets Maxine Susman and Jessica de Koninck read for 20 minutes each followed by an open mic session when Princeton Public Library hosts Poetry in the Library Monday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m.
 
Susman’s poems appear in Paterson Literary Review, US 1 Worksheets and many other journals. She has taught writing and literature at Rutgers, Seton Hall and Caldwell College.
 
De Koninck’s poems appear in a variety of journals and anthologies including the Valparaiso Poetry Review, Paterson Literary Review, US 1 Worksheets and others.

The Board of Trustees of Princeton Pro Musica (PPM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ryan James Brandau as its new artistic director, effective with the 2012-2013 season. Dr. Brandau was selected after a rigorous 12-month international search to replace retiring artistic director and founder Frances Fowler Slade. The Board voted unanimously and enthusiastically to confirm Dr. Brandau’s appointment.

This popular jazz ensemble returns to the library to perform a concert of music by Dave Brubeck, along with original compositions. Pianist and composer Mintel, who founded the group in 1993, is known as a top interpreter of Brubeck’s music. The quartet released the critically acclaimed album “50 Years After…A Tribute to Dave Brubeck” in 2010.

Westminster Conservatory Noontime Recital Series Closes Season with Trio Brillante on Thursday, May 17

    The 10th season of the noontime series Westminster Conservatory at Nassau will close with a performance by Trio Brillante on Thursday, May 17 at 12:15 p.m. in Niles Chapel of Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau Street in Princeton.  Trio Brillante is composed of Westminster Conservatory faculty members Katherine McClure, flute; Melissa Bohl, oboe; and Esma Pasic-Filipovic, piano.  Admission is free.

Kinnara® Ensemble, the noted chamber choir, will present “…and gone the next,” a choral reflection on change and loss.

This one hour concert will explore the ways choral music has served as a medium for expression of reaction to calamities such as sudden and unexpected loss. We venerate the victims of such events through the performance of pieces written to honor them.” Repertoire will include works by Mäntyjärvi, Byrd and MacMillan.

The Princeton based choir consists of 24 professional artists and is under the direction of JD Burnett

West Windsor, N.J. - The artistic talents of Mercer County Community College's art students will be showcased in this year's "MCCC Visual Arts Student Exhibition," on display from Tuesday, April 24, through Thursday, May 17.
The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place at The Gallery at MCCC, located on the second floor of the college's Communications Building on the West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. An Opening Reception is set for Wednesday, April 25, from 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Princeton PublicLibrary is accepting original film submissions for the 2012 Princeton Student Film & Video Festival being held July 18-19. The student filmmakers will be invited to introduce and talk about their works during the ninth annual festival, a popular two-day event intended for teen and adult audiences.
Librarian Susan Conlon, who coordinates the festival each year, is working with a screeningcommittee to review all films. Deadline for submission is June 25.

The Westminster Chapel Choir, conducted by Amanda Quist, will present a concert entitled “Songs of Heaven and Earth” on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 8 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the campus of Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J.

The program includes Arvo Pärt's Berliner Messe; Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque; Mozart’s Veni Sancte Spiritus, K. 47, believed to have been composed when Mozart was 12 years old; and works by Augustinas and Rachmaninoff.

The program includes Richard Rodney Bennett’s The Glory and the Dream, whose text is drawn from William Wordsworth’s poem Intimations of Immortality.
