Author Henry Giroux will give a talk titled “The Crisis of Youth in the Age of Disposability” Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Princeton Public Library. Among Giroux’s many books are “The Mouse that Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence,” “Stealing Innocence: Corporate Culture’s War on Children,” and “Education and the Crisis of Public Values.”

Central New Jersey theater ensemble CWW On Stage presents “Learning,” an intergenerational performance of monologues and skits focusing on the various ways in which people of all ages learn something new, Sunday, May 20 at Princeton Public Library. The performance will be in the library’s Community Room at 3 p.m.
 
“Learning” looks at new learning in every decade from teen to senior years. Stories from community members of all ages were collected for the project, and the script was created from these stories.

This community-wide celebration of school gardens, healthy living and sustainability is now in its second year – last year attracted several hundred visitors and this year we expect even more will attend to enjoy live music, local food, gardening and nutrition demonstrations, sports clinics, and arts and crafts in our beautiful school gardens.

The Honorable Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, will deliver a public lecture at the Woodrow Wilson School on May 17, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., in Dodds Auditorium. The talk, titled "Georgian Democratic Transformation: A Test Case for the Post-Soviet World," is being cosponsored by the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination (LISD) and the Wilson School. The address is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for entry. A public reception will follow the discussion in Shultz dining room and will include a musical performance by members of the Princeton Georgian Choir.

A panel of educators will discuss how to bring sustainability into the classroom on Tuesday, April 24, when Princeton Public Library presents “Greening the Curriculum” at 4:30 p.m. The panel will explore the principles of sustainability education, provide lists of resources and model best practices being implemented in several local classrooms.

The election for the Princeton School Board is coming up on April 17th, and there will be a "School Board Candidates' Night" this Tuesday.  Besides voting on the annual budget totalling $75,607,106 in operating expenses (click here for a pdf), voters will be asked to select two representatives from the Borough and one from the Township.

Sir Robert Watson, chair of the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2002, will speak at the Woodrow Wilson School on Monday, April 2, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. Watson's talk, titled, "Environment and Development Challenges: The Imperative to Act," is part of the School's "Energy and Environment" thematic lecture series. Watson is visiting the Wilson School as part of its "Leadership and Governance Program," which brings prominent policy makers to Princeton for a two to three day visit so that students can meet and learn from exemplary public leaders.

Award-winning poet, writer, anthologist, and educator Naomi Shihab Nye, will be the featured author at Stuart’s fourth annual Lies, Light, McCarthy Visiting Author Program. Ms. Nye is the author and/or editor of more than 30 volumes. Her notable works include the best-selling book of poetry, You & Yours, and Habibi, a novel for young readers. The public is invited to an after-school reading on March 29, 2012 at 4:30pm in Stuart’s Cor Unum Center. This event is free of charge.
