Borough Councilman and local business owner Kevin Wilkes is hoping to serve as the first mayor of consolidated Princeton.  If elected, he said that maintaining efficiency in municipal services would be his top priority.

“My goal is to effectively implement the consolidation program to manage our community affairs as one New Princeton,” Wilkes said.  “There is a high level of expectation in our community with regards to our two forms of government, and as they merge into one Princeton there can be no let down in service delivery to our citizens.”

Daniel Ellsberg, who in 1971 precipitated a national political controversy when he released the top secret "Pentagon Papers" to the media, will participate in a conversation with Bart Gellman '82, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author in residence and visiting lecturer in public and international affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School, titled, "Secrets, Lies, and Leaks: From the Pentagon Papers to Wikileaks." The event is co-sponsored by the Wilson School and the Princeton University Committee on Public Lectures. It is part of the School's "Media and Public Policy" thematic lecture series.

Transition Task Force Chooses Subcommittees, Enlists CGR

At their second meeting held on Wednesday, February 8, the consolidation task force plowed ahead toward the goal of consolidation by enlisting Joe Stefko, Director of Public Finance for Committee of Governmental Research (CGR) to determine CGR’s role and cost if they were hired. Other groundwork included forming subcommittees.

The first motion for the task force involved voting that CGR have a project proposal ready by the next meeting.

NJ DOT unveils details of pilot program to test road closures

Emotions ran high at the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (DOT) public meeting to discuss their pilot project to test jughandle closures at Harrison and Washington Streets to relieve traffic congestion on Route 1. Around eighty Princeton residents showed up to voice their concerns that the proposed rerouting of traffic would increase congestion on Princeton streets.

Negotiations set to resume in January

Since the beginning of this school year, Princeton public school teachers have been working under the terms of a contract that expired nearly six months ago.

Negotiations regarding the contracts began in last January, between the Princeton Regional Education Association (PREA) and the Princeton Negotiations Board. After both sides failed to come to an agreement, the Public Employees Relations Council appointed a mediator, as the negotiations reached an impasse.

Jon Hauge, owner of the Savory Spice Shop, recently tasted the world’s hottest pepper, the bhut jolokia, also known as the ghost pepper, which is for sale in his shop.  “The best word to describe it is HOT,” says Hauge. “Sweat was definitely beading up on my forehead. I tried it with one of my employees, and we took pictures.”

Township meeting hears whitepaper on PILOT programs around the country

The co-author of a study on PILOT – an acronym for payments made voluntarily by tax-exempt nonprofits as a substitute for property taxes – recommended at a Township Committee meeting Monday that a collaborative approach would be better than “public shaming”, a process she called “highly contentious.”

Trained, bilingual volunteers will be on hand to assist local immigration attorneys who will be donating their time to review citizenship applications. A new report on local commercial real estate activity provides a mostly upbeat assessment for the first half of 2011, with many commercial realty professionals--in submarkets as diverse as office, warehouse, and boutique space -- agreeing with the report’s conclusion:  the economy has put the worst behind.
