NJ DOT unveils details of pilot program to test road closures

Emotions ran high at the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s (DOT) public meeting to discuss their pilot project to test jughandle closures at Harrison and Washington Streets to relieve traffic congestion on Route 1. Around eighty Princeton residents showed up to voice their concerns that the proposed rerouting of traffic would increase congestion on Princeton streets.

Created by Harry Shearer, this award-winning film explores the true cause of the flooding that occurred in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Shearer’s investigation led him to the conclusion that taxpayers in more than 100 American cities are being affected by the shortsighted and environmentally damaging Army Corps of Engineers projects. Following the film, Judith Robinson of Princeton Farmers’ Market and Tracy Carluccio, deputy director of the Delaware Riverkeeper, will lead a discussion of the Corps’ proposal to dredge the Delaware River. 1 hour, 35 minutes

In a town hall meeting with Princeton Township Mayor Chad Goerner and Princeton Borough Council member Kevin Wilkes, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie congratulated the two Princetons on the recent vote in favor of consolidation.

“We have to start not just talking about challenging the status quo, but actually challenging it,” Christie said, calling the Princetons an example for the rest of the state.

At Tuesday evening’s mayoral debate between Democratic candidate Yina Moore and Republican candidate Jill Jachera, the two women answered questions on pressing local issues like consolidation, movement of the Dinky, Hurricane Irene, and town relationships with Princeton University.

With regards to the University’s development of the Arts and Transit Neighborhood, which would require moving the Dinky terminus, Moore stated that she did not think moving the Dinky “is the right thing to do.

Some people know Lidia Usami as a musician.  Some as an economist.  Now, she's a force for good.

Lidia Usami is more than an economist, speechwriter, publicist, translator, pianist, piano teacher, and fluent in five languages -- she is also the founder of the Kids4Kids charitable program in Princeton. “Music needs to be played to uplift people’s spirits,” says Lidia, “and to do something for the community.”

Downed branches and power lines snarl local traffic

(3:40pm update:  Mercer Street and Quaker Road are open.  Most of 206 still closed.  Be prepared for aggravated rush-hour delays.)

Several major roads were still closed as of 9 o'clock this morning, after last night's strong winds brought down trees and power lines around Princeton.

The Princeton Township Police Department is urging drivers to respect the Detour signs, orange cones, and road closure tapes that have gone up overnight, as PSE&G crews struggle to restore service in various parts of town.

A fundraising/cultural event for the Tohoku International School in Japan will take place at Riverside on June 10th, Friday, from 7-9 p.m.  This will be an evening filled with opportunities to learn about Japan and the recent earthquake/tsunami.  The event opens with a lecture for children and parents on the Japanese experiences of earthquake and tsunami, storytelling of an old tale from Japan about a man who saved a village from tsunami, a shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) performance, and Japanese songs performed by Riverside students.

"Kids for Kids - through Music" holds its Third Annual benefit performance for victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami.  Musicians range in age from 6-13 years, accompanied by Princeton University students.  The performance will be held at Forbes College on the campus of Princeton University, and is open to the public.

Lulled to sleep by the sound of a rare thundersnowstorm, Princeton residents woke up to the task of digging themselves out from 10.5 inches of snow.

On top of the previous three snowstorms, that makes this month the snowiest January in more than half a century.

And brace yourselves, there's more in the near-term forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Perhaps we are fated not to see the ground until the spring thaw.  Or so it seemed this morning, when we woke to a snowfall that came earlier than predicted.  This radar snapshot at 2:30pm shows one storm leaving and another one coming.

Princeton declared a snow emergency at 10am this morning.  More coming this evening.  Keep track of the forecast on the National Weather Service site.
