Would Princeton Schools by any other name still seem as sweet?

It’s official: Princeton Regional Schools is no more. Don’t get too panicked - only the name was traded in.

The Board of Education, at their meeting on February 7,  traded in PRS for the much more stylish PPS, which stands for Princeton Public Schools.

The Westminster Community Orchestra, conducted by Ruth Ochs, will present a concert entitled “The French Connection” on Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m. in the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center in Princeton High School.

Westminster Conservatory of Music will present a benefit concert on Saturday, January 7, at 5 p.m. in Williamson Hall on the campus of Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton. It will be followed by a reception and silent auction of unique crafted jewelry pieces in Thayer Lounge.  Admission to the concert and reception is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.  Proceeds from both events will benefit the Dr. H Korkina Scholarship Fund for dedicated Westminster Conservatory students.

This ensemble, featuring some of the top players in the nationally renowned and award-winning Princeton High School Studio Band, will kick off a new series titled Crescendo : Musicians on the Rise, which will showcase New Jersey musicians under 25.  The Studio Band recently returned from Hawaii, where it was the only high school ensemble to perform at  ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the invation of Pearl Harbor.

The library extends its regular Friday hours for this annual event featuring vocal groups from high schools in Princeton. The event is open only to students attending Princeton high schools, and it will be chaperoned by library and Corner House staff. Sponsored by the library and Corner House.

Westminster Opera Theater will present Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte, The Magic Flute, on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3 at 8 p.m. in the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center at Princeton High School.  Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

The performers are students at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Michael Philip Davis is stage director and William Hobbs is music director.  It will be sung in German with English supertitles, and the dialogue will be in English.

The growing popularity of taking a year off from school before going back to school.

As most high school graduates head back to the classroom this fall to begin their first semester of college, others will head to exotic destinations like Peru, India or Tanzania, doing service-work, a language immersion program or whatever their hearts desire. These students have decided to stay out of the classroom for a year and take a "gap year", a practice that is becoming increasingly common in the U.S..

The Princeton 5K Race is a mostly flat course in and around the neighborhood of Princeton High School. Start on Walnut Lane and finish on the Princeton High School Track. All proceeds from this race benefit the Princeton High School Track & Field Teams.

February 25, 2011—NUMINA GALLERY, Princeton High School presents ”Artist–Teacher Show”, an exhibition showcasing for the first time, twenty-two local artists who teach in Princeton and the surrounding area. Artists come from the Arts Council of Princeton, Grounds for Sculpture, Princeton High School, Stuart Country Day School, and Princeton Day School. Some artists also teach independently in the community. Media includes painting, sculpture, photography, prints, stained glass, and mixed media.

Highest per-pupil spending in the county

New Jersey’s Department of Education has just released its annual School Report Card, and it shows that Princeton Regional Schools spent $17,421 per pupil last year, the highest average in Mercer County.  That represents a six percent increase from the 2008-09 average of $16,407.

Some highlights:
- 98% of Princeton High School students graduate
- 83.8% go on to a four-year college

An exhibition of the artworks of Mike Gyampo and Ben Colbert will be held from Jan 28 to Feb 11 at Princeton High School's Numina Gallery, with a reception on Friday, Jan 28 from 6-8 pm.  The gallery opening hours are 3-4 pm on weekdays and 2-4 pm on Sunday Feb 6.

Perhaps we are fated not to see the ground until the spring thaw.  Or so it seemed this morning, when we woke to a snowfall that came earlier than predicted.  This radar snapshot at 2:30pm shows one storm leaving and another one coming.
