The third annual Battle of the Bands sponsored by What’s Up Princeton is scheduled for Friday, June 1, at Princeton Public Library. Planned for 4-8 p.m. on Hinds Plaza, the event is being held on the first Friday that the library’s new 9 p.m. closing time goes into effect.
 
Battle of the Bands is open to middle and high school students and other young adult performers. Registration by May 22 is required and can be completed at bit.ly/PBOTB2012.

Best-selling author and New York Times columnist Gail Collins kicks off the promotional tour of her latest book, “As Texas Goes … How the Lone Star State Hijacked the American Agenda,” Tuesday, June 5 at 7 p.m., at Princeton Public Library. 
 
Having long seen America's fundamental divide as a war between the Republican heartland and the two liberal coasts, Collins came to believe that Texas was the birthplace of the conservative political agenda that is now sweeping the country and defining our national identity.

Singer and pianist Fred Miller presents a Lecture in Song Saturday, May 19 at 3 p.m. in the Community Room of Princeton Public Library.
 
Miller, a favorite with library audiences, returns to present another in his series of programs examining American pop standards. This program focuses on lyricist, composer, pop singer and recording executive Johnny Mercer, whose many hits include “That Old Black Magic,” “Fools Rush In,” One for My Baby,” and “I Remember You.”

Featured poets Maxine Susman and Jessica de Koninck read for 20 minutes each followed by an open mic session when Princeton Public Library hosts Poetry in the Library Monday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m.
 
Susman’s poems appear in Paterson Literary Review, US 1 Worksheets and many other journals. She has taught writing and literature at Rutgers, Seton Hall and Caldwell College.
 
De Koninck’s poems appear in a variety of journals and anthologies including the Valparaiso Poetry Review, Paterson Literary Review, US 1 Worksheets and others.

Author Henry Giroux will give a talk titled “The Crisis of Youth in the Age of Disposability” Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Princeton Public Library. Among Giroux’s many books are “The Mouse that Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence,” “Stealing Innocence: Corporate Culture’s War on Children,” and “Education and the Crisis of Public Values.”

This popular jazz ensemble returns to the library to perform a concert of music by Dave Brubeck, along with original compositions. Pianist and composer Mintel, who founded the group in 1993, is known as a top interpreter of Brubeck’s music. The quartet released the critically acclaimed album “50 Years After…A Tribute to Dave Brubeck” in 2010.

Central New Jersey theater ensemble CWW On Stage presents “Learning,” an intergenerational performance of monologues and skits focusing on the various ways in which people of all ages learn something new, Sunday, May 20 at Princeton Public Library. The performance will be in the library’s Community Room at 3 p.m.
 
“Learning” looks at new learning in every decade from teen to senior years. Stories from community members of all ages were collected for the project, and the script was created from these stories.

A panel of educators will discuss how to bring sustainability into the classroom on Tuesday, April 24, when Princeton Public Library presents “Greening the Curriculum” at 4:30 p.m. The panel will explore the principles of sustainability education, provide lists of resources and model best practices being implemented in several local classrooms.

In a talked called "Juice for Health" the staff at Tico’s Eatery will discuss the benefits of juicing and invite the audience to sample different flavorful combinations of fruits and vegetables. In addition, Costa Rican cuisine, which is a staple of the menu at Tico's and reflects the heritage of the owner, will be highlighted. Part of the Flavors of Princeton series.

Josh Slocum, executive director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance and co-author of the book “Final Rights: Reclaiming the American Way of Death,” will report on the state of the funeral industry nationwide and in New Jersey. Slocum’s book examines the $15 billion funeral and burial industry, exposing consumer abuse, financial exploitation of the bereaved and problems government regulators have in protecting the grieving. He will discuss his lobbying effort to encourage Congress to pass a bill curbing abuses of cemeteries. Community Room

This program will address the internal conflicts for a bystander who witnesses bullying or other mistreatment and will give adults and young people the chance to get some practice and advice on handling situations in the community and in schools.
