Would Princeton Schools by any other name still seem as sweet?

It’s official: Princeton Regional Schools is no more. Don’t get too panicked - only the name was traded in.

The Board of Education, at their meeting on February 7,  traded in PRS for the much more stylish PPS, which stands for Princeton Public Schools.

Westminster Opera Theater will present Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte, The Magic Flute, on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3 at 8 p.m. in the Princeton Regional Schools Performing Arts Center at Princeton High School.  Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.

The performers are students at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Michael Philip Davis is stage director and William Hobbs is music director.  It will be sung in German with English supertitles, and the dialogue will be in English.

RAIN LOCATION: Suzanne Patterson Center, 45 Stockton Street (Behind Princeton Borough Hall).  This marching band event by the award winning Bushwackers is sponsored by the Valley Road School-Adaptive Reuse Committee (VRS-ARC) and Valley Road Community Center, Inc. (VRSCCI). Founded in 1981, the Bushwackers are six-time DCA World Champions, a 60-member all-age drum and bugle corps coming fresh from the Jersey Shore Invitational Competition being held the previous week.

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, Princeton Regional Schools outlined a preliminary budget for the 2011-2012 school year that minimized impact on student and faculty while working within the recently legislated 2% cap on school tax increases.

Highest per-pupil spending in the county

New Jersey’s Department of Education has just released its annual School Report Card, and it shows that Princeton Regional Schools spent $17,421 per pupil last year, the highest average in Mercer County.  That represents a six percent increase from the 2008-09 average of $16,407.

Some highlights:
- 98% of Princeton High School students graduate
- 83.8% go on to a four-year college

A transformer exploded in front of the Nassau Inn this morning, prompting the temporary evacuation of some guests.  Nassau Inn operations are back to normal as of 11:20 am, but Palmer Square East Street is blocked by repair trucks.

Not surprisingly, Princeton schools surpassed the state average by all performance measures, even when taking into account the District Factor Group which recalculates based on comparable socio-economic ranking.
