Sir Robert Watson, chair of the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) from 1997 to 2002, will speak at the Woodrow Wilson School on Monday, April 2, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. Watson's talk, titled, "Environment and Development Challenges: The Imperative to Act," is part of the School's "Energy and Environment" thematic lecture series. Watson is visiting the Wilson School as part of its "Leadership and Governance Program," which brings prominent policy makers to Princeton for a two to three day visit so that students can meet and learn from exemplary public leaders.

Phil Barnett '79, minority staff director for the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, will present a public talk at the Woodrow Wilson School titled, "The Politics of Climate Legislation: Failed Attempts and the Prospect for Future Legislation," on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. The discussion is part of the School's "Energy and Environment" thematic lecture series.

Jared Cohen, director of "Google Ideas," will present a public talk titled, "The New Digital Age: The Future of Citizens, States, and Business," at the Woodrow Wilson School as part of the School's "Media and Public Policy" thematic lecture series.

Created in 2010 with Cohen at its helm, Google Ideas is a cross-sector, inter-disciplinary "think/do tank" dedicated to understanding global challenges and applying technological solutions to these worldwide problems. Google Ideas further positions Google to influence global cultural, political and social issues.

Transition Task Force Chooses Subcommittees, Enlists CGR

At their second meeting held on Wednesday, February 8, the consolidation task force plowed ahead toward the goal of consolidation by enlisting Joe Stefko, Director of Public Finance for Committee of Governmental Research (CGR) to determine CGR’s role and cost if they were hired. Other groundwork included forming subcommittees.

The first motion for the task force involved voting that CGR have a project proposal ready by the next meeting.

In Room 172 at Princeton High School, you can see what happens when art students get a few months to riff on a skull.

The Studio Art 2D III and Studio Art 2D IV classes at Princeton High School hosted the opening of their Skull Show on Friday, the 13th. The show took place in one of the high school’s art rooms, and featured seven pieces. The students were given an animal skull at the beginning of the year and told to “use it as a catalyst”.  Finding its meaning can lead to some rather interesting works, especially when in groups. Of the seven pieces, six were created by groups of two or three.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium, will discuss the ambitions, achievements and shortcomings of NASA's Apollo space program at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in McCosh Hall, Room 50. The illustrated lecture, "Delusions of Space Enthusiasts," is sponsored by the Princeton University Public Lectures’ Louis Clark Vanuxem Fund and the University's Department of Astrophysical Sciences.

After a history of failed attempts, the Princetons have finally overcome the first obstacle to consolidation: agreeing on it. Now comes the hard part.

The Princetons are now accepting applications (until Dec. 7) for a transition team with a historic mission:  consolidating the borough and township into a merged government that will take over on January 1, 2013.

This exciting workshop will introduce adults and older teens (16yo+) to an illuminating look at last season's wildflowers. We begin with a brisk 2-hour morning walk on the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Reserve trails with Jeff Hoagland, SBMWA Education Director. Jeff will help you discover a wide variety of plants, sharing their natural history while offering identification tips. Participants will collect specimens for later use in the studio.

Some people know Lidia Usami as a musician.  Some as an economist.  Now, she's a force for good.

Lidia Usami is more than an economist, speechwriter, publicist, translator, pianist, piano teacher, and fluent in five languages -- she is also the founder of the Kids4Kids charitable program in Princeton. “Music needs to be played to uplift people’s spirits,” says Lidia, “and to do something for the community.”

Arts and Transit negotiations get a public hearing

Princeton’s Borough Council and Township Committee plan to introduce the new zoning ordinance for Princeton University’s Arts and Transit project on May 3, with a final decision possible sometime in June. This was decided at a joint Borough-Township meeting last evening, although no formal action was taken. The meeting also sought to clarify questions from concerned residents and debate the process by which zoning ordinances and negotiation committees would be presented and approved.

Princeton University students collaborate with a professional director in the creation of a historically accurate and dramaturgically pungent theatrical work about Roman Emperor Nero. A Classical Latin libretto and fusion of ancient folklore and neo-Romantic music present a modern take on the life of the last Julio-Claudian in the opera Nero Artifex.

Nero Artifexwill be performed in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall on the Princeton University campus on March 24th and 25th at 8pm (free admission). For more information visit NeroOpera.NET.

The Poquelin Players (Derry Light, Tom Stevenson, Dan Siegel and Dick Swain) present the premier reading of this play by Susan Quinn and Dan Jacobs about Hallie Flanagan, director of the Federal Theater Project of the Works Project Administration.  Quinn is the author of the book "Furious Improvisation: How the WPA and a Cast of Thousands Made High Art out of Desperate Times."  The new play brings to life this important period in American theater history.
